South Melbourne Through To Aus Cup Semi

South Melbourne through to Aus Cup Semi

South Melbourne continued their impressive run in the Australia Cup with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Hume City at ABD Stadium on Tuesday night.

The hosts took the lead through a Billy Koutroumbas own goal in the first half, but South Melbourne hit back with goals from Lachlan Griffiths and Matt Millar either side of half-time.

The win was South Melbourne's third in the competition this season, and it sets up a semi-final clash with either Sydney United 58 or Adelaide United.

South Melbourne coach Chris Taylor was pleased with his team's performance, particularly their ability to come from behind.

"I thought we showed great character to come back from a goal down," Taylor said.

"Hume City are a good side, but we were able to create some good chances and take them."

Hume City coach Nick Hegarty was disappointed with his team's performance, but he praised their effort.

"I thought we started the game well and took the lead, but we didn't create enough chances after that," Hegarty said.

"South Melbourne are a quality side, and they were able to punish us for our mistakes."

Griffiths opened the scoring for South Melbourne in the 25th minute, latching onto a pass from George Howard and firing into the bottom corner.

Hume City equalized in the 40th minute through Koutroumbas' own goal, but Millar restored South Melbourne's lead just before half-time.

The second half was a more even affair, but South Melbourne held on to secure their place in the semi-finals.
