West Nile Virus in Massachusetts: First Human Case Confirmed

Subheadline: Man in Hampden County Tests Positive

Background:

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) has announced the first human case of West Nile Virus (WNV) in the state for 2024. The individual is a man in his 40s who was exposed to the virus in Hampden County.

Case Details:

According to DPH, the man tested positive for WNV after experiencing symptoms consistent with the virus, including fever, headache, and muscle weakness. He is currently recovering.

Additional Information:

WNV is a mosquito-borne illness that can cause flu-like symptoms, severe neurological disease, and even death. It is typically transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito.

DPH advises residents to take precautions to protect themselves from mosquito bites, including using insect repellent, wearing long sleeves and pants, and avoiding outdoor activities during peak mosquito hours (dusk and dawn).

The state also urges residents to report any dead birds or other animals to their local health department, as these can be an indicator of WNV activity.
