Cicadas Are Coming

Cicadas are Coming!!!

Interactive Map for Brood XIX and Brood XIII in 2024

Trillions of periodical cicadas will emerge from the ground this spring.

In just a few weeks, over a dozen states will be abuzz as trillions of periodical cicadas emerge from the ground. This year is unique due to the fact that two different broods of cicadas will be emerging at the same time: Brood XIX and Brood XIII. Brood XIX is the larger of the two broods, and it is expected to emerge in parts of Tennessee, North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island. Brood XIII is smaller, and it is expected to emerge in parts of Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and West Virginia.

The different species of cicada that emerge have different calls and different life cycles. Brood XIX cicadas have a 17-year life cycle, and they will be emerging for the first time since 2007. Brood XIII cicadas have a 13-year life cycle, and they will be emerging for the first time since 2011.

Cicadas are harmless to humans and animals, but they can be a nuisance. They can be very loud, and they can sometimes damage trees and plants. However, cicadas are also an important part of the ecosystem. They help to aerate the soil, and they provide food for birds, bats, and other animals.

If you live in an area where cicadas are expected to emerge, you can take steps to minimize the impact on your property. You can close your windows and doors to keep the noise out, and you can cover your plants to protect them from damage. You can also try to scare the cicadas away by making loud noises or by spraying them with water.

Cicadas are a fascinating part of nature, and they are a reminder of the importance of the ecosystem. If you are lucky enough to live in an area where cicadas are emerging, be sure to take the time to enjoy them.
