Benfica Reaches Europa League Final
Cardozo Scores Twice
Confident in Ending Final Losing Streak
LISBON, Portugal (AP) — Benfica advanced to the Europa League final after Oscar Cardozo scored twice in a 2-0 victory over Fenerbahce on Thursday. The Portuguese club will face Sevilla in the final in Turin, Italy, on May 14.
It will be Benfica's first European final since 1990, when they lost to AC Milan in the European Cup. Benfica has also lost in the UEFA Cup final in 1983 and the now-defunct European Cup Winners' Cup final in 1965.
"We're very happy to have reached the final," said Benfica coach Jorge Jesus. "We've worked very hard for this, and we deserve to be there."
Jesus is confident that Benfica can end their European final curse against Sevilla.
"We're a very good team, and we're playing with a lot of confidence," Jesus said. "We know that Sevilla is a great team, but we're not afraid of them. We're going to go into the final with the belief that we can win."
